Doo-doo doo-doo

Remember "Jaws", the movie?

My subject line is the start of the creepy music at the opening.

Hum it, you'll see.

Doo-doo doo-doo.

It represents something scary about to happen.

Nowadays someone will sing it to show that what they're discussing is a bit off the planet. Like the 'we never landed on the moon' and other conspiracy theories.

It's good to get a laugh going.

I want you to hum this little ditty also when you read most positive thinking books.

Because many of them are a little wacky. I mentioned "The Secret" a few newsletters back. It looks good in theory, but rarely works out in practice.

That's because the views in it are open to personal interpretation.

Unlike my system.

There is nothing more satisfying to me than seeing a bunch of numbers. They have strength, purpose, conviction... when they are used correctly.

Positive thinking, well - it's good in the right circumstances... if you use it to raise your enthusiasm in the driving rain when you need to get down to your local lotto store, for example.

Now, I often talk about staying positive. But for an entirely different reason.

The Green Light Mythbuster

When you hear an implausible story these days, you're likely to call it an urban myth.

Like children being kidnapped at Disneyland. Or glasses making your eyes weak.

Just doesn't happen.

Back in my teenage years, I heard of another kind of myth from a friend which seemed worth exploring.

It revealed that in our biggest city, the main road - Queen Street - held an strange secret.

This road ran straight as an arrow right down to the harbor. About a mile long, I guess.

And it contained about 12 traffic lights.

Now, legend had it that if you started at the top of the street at the stroke of midnight, and traveled exactly 30 mph, every light would turn green as you approached it, until you reached the end.

This was in the days when lights were controlled by a simple magnetic strip buried in the road - nothing like the super sophisticated computer controlled lights today.

You guessed it. We were young. We had a car.

We had to try it.

I'll tell you what happened in a minute.

But imagine if you were able to get a series of always-green lights for your lotto game.

OK, back to our green light trip down Auckland's 1.8km (1.1 mile) Queen Street.

Does This Lottery Number Scare You?

If you ever stepped into our lounge and listened to my wife and I talk, you could be forgiven for thinking we were from another planet.

We talk in a secret code.

Not just the familiar banter that people who have lived with each other for nearly 40 years do.

But a weird kind of abbreviation.

My wife would ask: "How much was the Lexus servicing this time dear?"

"Seven eighty," I would reply absent-mindedly, as I continued to file my nails (more on that strange action shortly!)

A few minutes later I would look up from the real estate section of the paper and exclaim: "I can't believe they want over two for that place. It doesn't even have a lift!"

"And look at this property - they want one point three for it."

And so it goes on.

Have you guessed what we do?

Yes, we abbreviate money terms.

"Seven eighty" is seven hundred and eighty dollars.
"Two" is two million dollars.
"one point three" is one million three hundred thousand dollars.

We diminish the power of numbers so they don't scare us.

And we do that by abbreviating them.

It's quite common for moneyed folks to act in this way.

I first heard about it several decades ago after a prominent real estate investor was interviewed.

He talked about reducing the power of numbers to scare him... by just talking bare figures and leaving out the "x million dollars" description.

"If I thought about the real impact of the amount as dollars," he was quoted as saying, "I wouldn't be brave enough to get out of bed each day."

What the abbreviation does is quite extraordinary.

It removes the mental benchmarks we all have in our heads.

Like this...

Many folk on regular wages see their annual income as the largest amount they are familiar with. So that $40,000 becomes their mindset... the amount that represents a ceiling in their mental adjustment.

When it comes to buying a house worth many time more than this benchmark, they become nervous.

With lottery winnings, it's almost impossible to comprehend the impact of many tens or hundreds of millions of dollars will have on our lifestyle.

So we give up striving for it.

For you to move ahead financially - to stop getting paralyzed with fear every time you imagine spending millions of greenbacks in one shot - you need to disassociate yourself from the physical amount.

Think of it merely as an abstract figure.

When's The Best Time To WIn Lotto?

Most people prefer defined, set times for doing stuff.

They rarely act on a whim.

Giving up smoking? Going to lose weight?

Most folk say they'll do it on Monday... regardless of whatever day it is now. Or at the beginning of the month, or New Year.

Would You Go Back To Work After Winning Lotto?

In this morning's newspaper was a story about a couple of $66 million winners.

I nearly tore my hair out when I read it.

Because how this middle-aged couple reacted is typical of many large lottery winners when they get the good news.

They are in shock. Disoriented. Confused.

All reason leaves them.

All their normal boundaries are shaken to the core by the vast change in their finances.

Think - never again will they have to owe money to a single soul. They can pay for anything they want.

They can walk down the street, point at almost anything at random... cars, buildings, furniture... and mutter happily to themselves: "I could buy that, right now!"

So what this couple did that annoyed me is quite common... it's a well-known trait recognized by lottery officials who see it all the time.

Tell me someone you know who loves their work and can't wait to get into the factory/office every morning.

I doubt whether you'd find anyone like that in a hurry.

When I was employed many years ago (and never again!) - even 5 minute's notice would have been too long. See ya!

I Took A Peek And Found These Lottery Shockers

Over the last week I took a peek at some competitor's lottery systems.

It's not something I've done for several years. But last week I needed to find out a few things - I'll tell you about them in a minute.

What was most interesting about my task was not what I expected.

How To Clean Up Your Lottery Game

I was cleaning our coffee table this morning. 

"Excuse me," said my wife, looking up from her coffee. "I've already cleaned that today."

I didn't know that. 

You see, each day - if I have a microfiber cloth in my hand - I often go over an item of furniture in our lounge, to clean it up and dust it down.

A Neat Party Trick

My friends are always amazed at my dinner party trick.

I come up with rapid answers to their money questions. It's one of several easy skills I use to astonish people. 

For example, they might ask, "How much is $60,000/yr per week?"

Almost instantly I can say "$1200."

It's actually $1153, but for quick calculations in a split second my quick & dirty amount is perfectly OK. And I can do it for any amount, simple figures or complex ones.

What if you won $20 milllion, and wanted to know how much 10% interest would give you each week.

"$40,000 a week," is my reply, in less than 1 second.

I'll tell you how I do it in a minute. 

But first let me introduce you to some other mind-blowing magic figures I use daily:

- Win 8 out of every 10 games.

- Increase your win rate up to 98%.

You don't have to be a whiz at figures to see that I can get you winning more frequently than you ever thought possible.

But back to explaining my party trick. You'll be surprised how easy it is.

Let's take the yearly amount of $45,000.

To get the approximate weekly figure, just take the first 2 numbers and double them like so: 45 becomes 90.

Add a zero. 

The answer is around $900 per week.

Easy. What about 10% of $20 million in a weekly sum?

That's a little more headwork.

Well, 10% of anything is easy to work out. In this case you can figure $2m straight away.

Then use the first 2 figures of $2,000,000 and double them to get 40. Add a 3 zeros because you're dealing with a million, and it becomes $40,000 a week.

Try it. Works with any figure.

You've only got a day or so left before the weekend's lotto game.

Times Are Tough--What Still Works?

When times are tough, luxury items are the first expenses to be given up. Goodbye to the second car and turn down the heating.

When Your Lottery Ship Comes In

Our lounge window looks out to the harbor below. 

It's a panoramic wall of glass 16 ft high by 35 ft long.

In other words, huge. 

From our position high on the hill, we feel though we're on top of the world.

And from time to time, as we look out to this captivating view, my wife remarks about one of the interisland ferries sitting out in the harbor. Every few days, one of those large ships stays in the same spot, for no apparent reason at all.

"I wonder why it's not moving," she muses, to no-one in particular.

Another day she might point it out again to some guests, who also put forward their views.

"Perhaps it's broken down," someone might say.

"They're testing the engines or training a new captain," ventures someone else.

After about a half hour or so, the ship moves off, berths at the wharf, and we go back to our dinner none the wiser.

Jack's New Winning Lottery Number System

Jack's eyes twinkled as he pulled up a chair in my home office.

"Hey Ken," he said, stretching his feet out with a self-satisfied smile and putting his coffee on my desk, "I've got something to tell you that will knock your socks off."

"So you've decided to buy my system?" I questioned.

"Good idea," I said, "but it won't work. Your idea works on positive frequency... the number of times they were drawn over many games. You got to think sequence. These numbers come from different games at different times, and the chance of them all coming together in a sequence in one game is very unlikely."

His face dropped.

I went on to explain to Jack that the idea was also flawed because it relied on the wrong end of the computation - the winning end.
